Dr. Arthur Ammann carried this torch during the 1984 Summer Olympics torch relay prior to the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. Dr. Ammann was one of over 3,600 torchbearers who carried the torch over 9,000 miles across the United States. Dr. Ammann carried the torch from the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, CA, through the Presidio for the University of California San Francisco Medical Center.
Dr. Arthur Ammann ’58 is a pediatric immunologist who has done extensive research in pediatrics and HIV/AIDS in children and who, in 1982, first described two of the three known means of HIV transmission—mothers to infants and through blood transfusions. He also diagnosed the first children with HIV infection. Dr. Ammann is founder of Global Strategies, a non‐profit organization dedicated to responding to the health needs of disadvantaged women and child by reducing maternal and infant mortality in the poorest regions of the world.
