Truncation & Wildcards

?#*@!

Many library catalogs use truncation symbols or wildcards, such as asterisks, question marks or exclamation points to broaden their searches. While the symbol may change depending on the catalog or database you are using, the principle remains the same.

Truncation
will use a symbol placed at the end of a root word to find all possible endings for that word.

A wildcard is usually placed  in the middle of a word, and will search for variants of one or several letters.
