How to Find Theses & Dissertations

These instructions are designed for use with the Library catalog and research databases.


For theses and dissertations written for graduate programs at Wheaton College:

In the Library catalog, select the Advanced Search tab.
Small Guided Keyword
  • In the Search for box, enter thesis wheaton along with the name of the graduate program, such as:
    bible theology communications education
    educational ministries interdisciplinary studies psychology
    missions intercultural studies
  • Select Subject words in the Search by box.
  • Click on the Search button.


To find a thesis or dissertation written by a particular student at Wheaton:

In the Library catalog, select the Advanced Search tab.
Advanced Search

  • In the firstSearch for box, enter one of the phrases above (if you don't know the student's program, you may just enter thesis wheaton).
  • Select Subject words in the Search by box.
  • In the secondSearch for box enter the student's surname.
  • Select Author Words in the Search by box.
  • Click on the Search button.


To find citations of theses and dissertations written at other institutions:
Search Dissertation Abstracts Online (all disciplines). Despite its name, this database includes both theses and dissertations. If you know the name of the degree-granting institution, search that institution's library catalog.

The following research databases also contain citations of some theses and dissertations:
  • Agricola for biology and chemistry.
  • America: History and Life and for history.
  • ATLA Religion Index and Religious and Theological Abstracts for Bible, theology, and world religions.
  • Research in Ministry (RIM) Online and TREN for Bible, theology, and world religions.
  • EconLit for economics.
  • MLA International Bibliography for English and other modern languages.
  • World Shakespeare Bibliography Online for Shakespeare studies.
  • Music Index and RILM Abstracts of Music Literature for music.
  • PsycINFO for psychology.
  • Sociological Abstracts for sociology.


To obtain the thesis or dissertation in full text:

Search the I-Share online catalog to see what is available at other Illinois libraries. Items in I-Share may be requested for delivery to Buswell. If you still need more options, search WorldCat to see what is available through interlibrary loan. Requests for interlibrary loan may be placed directly in WorldCat.

If no copies are available in libraries, you may have the option of buying a copy. Consult the following links for more information, or ask a librarian for assistance.
