How to Find Journals

This guide explains how to find journals at Wheaton. (See also How to Find Journal Articles.)

There are two sources to consult in order to find out which journals (in paper or online) are available at Wheaton: the Journal List, and the Library Catalog. Please consult both sources before concluding that the journal is unavailable.

The Journal List:

Included in the Journal List:

  • journals we have access to online
  • journals Buswell currently subscribes to in paper

Not included in the Journal List:

  • journals Buswell subscribed to in the past which we no longer receive (i.e., we have older issues only)
  • journals Buswell subscribed to in the past which have ceased publication (i.e., we have older issues only)
Tip: If all you have is an abbreviated form of a journal title, you can determine the full title by consulting the reference book Periodical Title Abbreviations, kept on the Quick Reference Shelf in Buswell, call number RR 050 N154p.
If the Journal List says the journal is available in paper:
...a link is provided to the journal's record in the Library catalog, so that you can find out which volumes or years are available, and what the call number is.

The current year's issues of each journal we subscribe to in Buswell are shelved on the main level, alphabetically by title (music journals are shelved in the Music Library on the lower level).

Older issues of paper journals may be shelved on Buswell's lower level in the compact shelving, by call number beginning with M.

Older issues of paper journals may also be available on Microform. These are stored on Buswell’s main level, arranged alphabetically by title. Please see a Reference Librarian if you need assistance.

If the Journal List says the journal is available online:
...a form will appear in which you can enter the year, volume, issue, and start page of the article you want (if you are not looking for a particular article, just leave the form blank and click on the "Go" button).

Please note: the full-text content of some research databases changes from time to time. Some articles that were available in full text may disappear from the database, and new articles may be added. Because of this, the information provided by the Journal List may contain some errors. Please let us know of any errors you find, and we will pass them along to our Journal List provider.

The Library Catalog:

Included in the Library Catalog:

  • all journals in paper format

Not included in the Library Catalog:

  • journals available online

To find journals in the Library catalog:

  • In the catalog, select the Quick Search tab.
  • In the search for box, enter the journal's title in exact word order (do not enter an abbreviated title).
  • Select Start of Magazine/Journal Title in the Search by dropdown list.
  • Click on the search button.

Go to the Quick Search now

Tip: For titles beginning with articles (a, an, the, and their equivalents in other languages), try searching both with and without the article.
The catalog record will tell you which volumes or years are available, and what the call number is.

Some journal back issues are kept in Special Collections on the third floor of the Billy Graham Center.

If Wheaton doesn't provide the journal:
...you can request the article you need through interlibrary loan.
...or, check the journal's Web site. Some journal publishers provide a freely accessible online archive of back issues.

Helpful hints:

...use the Journal List.

To find out a full journal title from an abbreviation:
...Consult the reference book Periodical Title Abbreviations, kept on the Quick Reference Shelf in Buswell, call number RR 050 N154p.

To find out whether a particular journal is scholarly (peer-reviewed, refereed):
...consult Ulrich's International Periodicals Directory, kept on the Quick Reference Shelf in Buswell, call number RR 016.051 UL 1u . (Look up the journal's title in the title index in volume four.
