What is EZproxy and how does it work?

We use EZproxy to authenticate off-campus users in order to give them access to restricted library resources. Once off-campus users are authenticated (checked against the Wheaton College database of user names and passwords), the EZproxy proxy server connects them to the resource. Since the proxy server is connecting from on campus, its IP address is accepted by the remote site.

How do I get started?

Click on “Off-Campus Access” at the top the library’s web pages, and enter your Wheaton College user name and password. When the system verifies that you are a valid Wheaton College user, you will be able to access the restricted resources.

You will also need to adjust your proxy settings and enable cookies and JavaScript in your browser. Cookies are used by EZproxy and some databases to verify that you are an authorized user.

Why can I connect to most databases but not all of them?

Ezproxy works by detecting special wording in the URL. Sometimes this wording gets removed. Add this prefix to the URL: http://ezproxy.wheaton.edu/login?url=

If you cannot connect to a particular resource, it may be experiencing temporary problems. Check the library homepage where known problems will be posted. If no relevant information is posted, please contact us.
