EZProxy FAQ

What is EZproxy and how does it work?

The library uses EZproxy to authenticate off-campus users to access restricted resources. Most of the links on the Buswell Memorial Library's web site are not restricted but some links such as most database links are restricted. To access a restricted resource, off-campus users must login through EZproxy. When the off-campus user is authenticated or checked against the Wheaton College database of usernames and passwords, they will be granted access. When the off-campus user has been authenticated, the EZproxy proxy server then connects to the resource for the off-campus user. Since the proxy server is coming from on-campus, its IP address is accepted by the online resources.

How do I get started?

Click the Off-Campus Login image in the top of any of the library's (http://library.wheaton.edu) web sites  and enter your Wheaton College user name and password. When the system verifies that you are a valid Wheaton College user you will be able to access the library databases.

Do I need to do anything special to get connected?

You need to adjust your proxy settings and enable cookies and JavaScript in your browser to use EZproxy and get connected. Cookies are used by EZproxy and some databases to verify that you are an authorized user.

To adjust your browser settings:

  • In Internet Explorer 6.x go to Tools > Internet Options >
Connections tab > LAN Settings to ensure that all of the boxes including the "Use automatic configuration" script box are not checked.

  • In Mozilla Firefox 2.x go to Tools > Options
Advanced > Network Tab > Settings Select  Direct Connection to the Internet but do not select the proxy configuration of http://proxy.wheaton.edu.

To enable cookies:

  • In Internet Explorer 6.x go to Tools > Internet Options >
Privacy tab > and then set the privacy option to Medium or lower.

  • In Netscape 7.x go to Edit > Preferences >
Privacy and Security > Cookies > and check "Enable cookies for originating web site only"

  • In Netscape 4.x go to Edit > Preferences >
Advanced > and enable "Accept only cookies that get sent back to original server"

  • In Mozilla Firefox 2.x go to Tools > Options >
Privacy > Cookies > and check "Accept cookies from sites."

  • In Safari go to Preferences > Security >
Accept Cookies > and enable "Always.""

To enable JavaScript:

  • In Internet Explorer 6.x go to Tools > Internet Options >

Security > and then set the privacy option to Medium.

  • In Netscape 7.x go to Edit > Preferences >
Advanced > Scripts and Plugins > and select "Enable JavaScript for Navigator."

  • In Netscape 4.x go to Edit > Preferences >
Advanced > and check "Enable JavaScript."

  • In Mozilla Firefox 2.x go to Tools > Options > Content > and check "Enable JavaScript."

Why can I connect to most databases but not all of them?

If you can connect to any restricted database, then you should be able to connect to all of them. There are two possible explanations:

On-Campus and Off-Campus Problem with Database Access

Check the library homepage alert where databases access problems will be posted. There is a widespread access problem and nobody in Buswell Memorial Library, whether on-campus or off-campus, can successfully connect. Call the reference desk (630-752-5169) if you need assistance. Library staff will have to contact the database vendor hosting service to see what has happened.

Off-Campus Problem with Database Access

On-campus users can successfully connect to a resource while off-campus users cannot. Call the reference desk (630-752-5169) if you need assistance. The problem is probably some change that has affected the library's EZproxy configuration setup.  Database vendors can often make changes without informing their customers.

Why can't I connect from work?

Your workplace may be using a firewall or a proxy server for security reasons. If you get the message, "this page can not be displayed," then the connection problem is probably caused by a firewall issue. You need to contact your company's networking person to see if they can work around the firewall issue.

I'm a Comcast user. Why can't I access library resources from off-campus?

When Comcast installs their software they may make some changes to your machine's settings that will not allow access to the library resources. You may want to try using Mozilla Firefox

If you want to continue to use IE, please adjust your browser settings. See Do I need to do anything special to get connected?
